My name is Dharmananda Adhikari and I live in Hansapur's ward no. 5 in the district of Ghorka, Nepal.
On my farm I have never used any artificial fertilizer or chemical pesticides. We do coffee harvesting and processing like this: when the cherries are ripe, we hire laborers for harvesting and de-pulping. The latter is still done manually, since our village doesn’t own a de-pulping machine. After the cherries have been de-pulped we leave them in the sun to dry. I sell the coffee beans still in parchment. Annually the 40 coffee plants produce around 50kg of green beans, but I plan to plant more coffee plants in the future.
I’ve been engaged in agriculture all my life and farming has been my only source of income. All my children have moved abroad, and now it’s only me and my wife working on the farm. Rice, oranges and cardamom are our main crops. Six years ago I have started to grow coffee as well. I’ve heard that the conditions in this area are ideal for the coffee plants, so I wanted to try out the soil myself and it turned out that coffee grows very well in it. I was the first one from the village to plant it and now most of the farmers from our village grow it too.
Comment by Fairdirect e.V.: Due to the remoteness of his farm with no proper Internet access, and due to lack of a computer, Mr. Adhikari lets his webshop be managed by the Fairdirect e.V. association. We have interviewed Mr. Adhikari and translated and edited the shop and product descriptions from that. As always with sales facilitated by Fairdirect e.V., the contract will be between you and the farmer – Fairdirect will not be party to it. You can contact Eva Pivač <firstname.lastname@example.org>, our manager of the Hansapur shipment center, with your questions regarding this webshop. You can also contact Mr. Adhikari directly at his mobile phone number. You may need a Nepali translator to communicate with him.
